Points of Interest on Your Walk

Spring is here and April 3rd marks National Walking Day. It’s a splendid time of year to wander the neighborhood and find delight in the fresh air and natural beauty. There are several points of interest to take in while strolling along. The pecan grove on Clinton near the Blay sculpture hosts hundreds of yellow daffodils suited up just in time for Spring. Daffodils are a spring perennial plant of the Amaryllidaceae family. Various common names including daffodil, daffadowndilly, narcissus and jonquil are used to describe members of the genus. They boast six petal-like tepals surmounted by a cup- or trumpet-shaped corona. The floral display is courtesy of North Oak Cliff Greenspace and their commitment to beautifying the Coombs Creek Trail.

Another sight to behold is the Centennial Clock located at the entrance of Stevens Park Golf Course, an artisanal masterpiece made possible by the efforts of NOCGS and donors to the project, including KNU. The clock is a towering reminder of the symbiotic relationship shared by Stevens Park Golf Course and bordering neighborhoods. In 2018, the clock was dedicated to Joe D. Denton, a long-time Oak Cliff resident, banker and supporter of amateur and professional golfing in North Texas. The dedication ceremony was punctuated by personal and stirring stories about the recipient by speakers NOCGS President James Mathis, former Dallas City Councilman Bob Stimson, and Stevens Park Director of Golf Jim Henderson.

The clock continues to generate interest and contributions from golfers and non-golfers alike, with funds raised in excess of $60K for beautification efforts. If you are interested in purchasing a plaque on the base of the clock structure, contact KNU’s Representative to Greenspace Cindy Pierce at beautification@kesslerneighborsunited.org.
