Did you know 120,000 mint juleps are sold during Derby weekend in Louisville? This cocktail, traditionally served in a silver cup, has been associated with the Kentucky Derby for almost a century. If you are in the post-Derby blues, the bet didn’t pay off, or your rather obnoxious party hat just joined the stowaways under the bed, this trusty Southern sip is the perfect anecdote! To the rescue, National Mint Julep Day is on May 30th and all you need is bourbon, sugar, mint, and ice. A wraparound front porch, rocking chair or sultry afternoon is not required to enjoy a taste of Southern charm! Enjoy.

Prep Time: 15 min / Cook Time: 10 min / Ready In: 25 min


  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup roughly chopped fresh mint leaves
  • 32 fluid ounces Kentucky bourbon
  • 8 sprigs fresh mint leaves for garnish


  • Combine water, sugar and chopped mint leaves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow syrup to cool, approximately 1 hour. Pour syrup through a strainer to remove mint leaves.
  • Place eight silver goblets or glasses of choice in the freezer to chill. Remove and fill with crushed ice and pour 4 ounces of bourbon and 1/4 cup mint syrup in each. (Proportions can be adjusted depending on each person’s sweet tooth). Top each cup with a mint sprig and a straw. Trim straws to just barely protrude from the top of the cups. Serve juleps on your grandmother’s silver platter for an impressive display.
  • You can also try an unorthodox approach to the Mint Julep by adding a splash of cherry-lime, watermelon, peach or blackberry juice to the goblet.
  • And don’t forget about a batch of Mint Julep popsicles for a portable treat or a tray of Mint Julep ice cubes that can turn any old glass of sweet tea into a cocktail!
